The wine shows high intensity, full on oaky, nutty, almond, walnut, the fruit is way in the back. There is also a strong veggies profile, like a freshly baked pumpkin pie, a few raisins notes.
Very aggressive in the palate, medium to full body, extreme acidity, volatile notes, vinegar, citrus, quince, grapefruit, almond, long finish.
Very difficult as it is on its own

Vin de France Syrah Blend, Syrah more

Not a typical Syrah based wine I think. Pale ruby. Very sour red berry fruit of medium intensity on the nose (red cherry, cranberry, raspberry) as well some green leafiness. On the palate the aromatic character was more pronounced with the sour red berry fruit on the foreground and maybe some floral hints (rose?). Medium(+) flavor intensity. In terms of structure, it is a light-bodied wine with low tannins and really high acidity. Although I personally prefer this style of wine (light body, high acidity), I think that the acidity was a little bit over the top in terms of balance. I even noticed a slight sparkling sensation. Because of that, I don't think its so easy drinking and it needs a light dish. On the other hand I think it would be perfect companion for salads, light tomato-based dishes (pasta, pizza) or even some fish dishes. Relatively short finish. For me it was definitely an interesting wine to taste.

Great wine, seems to have settled in. Should only get better for 5 years, at least.

Olaf, who sold it to me, said it was intensely tannic at first, and had a closed period after that, but it's now peppery and textural with a lovely balance of tang. The Calek wines all have the cranberry juice VA thing which makes them light and airy despite their dark fruit. This one's a bit denser, even for him.

Highly, highly recommend decanting it. So-called barnyard and CO2 need to dissipate before you get to the good stuff!

A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, vinified without any sulfites.

Vibrant cherry color - somewhat hazy and rather opaque core but very clear, luminous rim. Ripe, wild and quite complex nose with vibrant and rather restic aromas of sweet blackberries, some stable floor, a little bit of bretty leather, light strawberry tones and a hint of juicy dark fruits. The wine is fresh, lively and wild on the palate with moderately full body and quite sweet-toned yet very crisp and crunchy flavors of brambly dark berries, some ripe strawberries, a little bit of juicy raspberries, light leathery tones, rather animal hints of barnyard and a touch of earthy spice. The structure relies mostly on the crunchy, high acidity as the tannins feel very soft and mellow. The finish is sweet-toned, wild and funky with pronounced acidity and vibrant flavors of sweet red berries, crunchy darker berries, some sunny dark fruit notes, a little bit of bretty barnyard and leather, light phenolic spice, a hint of sweet baking spices and a touch of coarse tannic grip.

A nice, approachable and wonderfully crunchy naturalist that tastes like Southern Rhône, but shows such freshness no Southern Rhône has ever shown. The wine might be too wild and funky for palates with preference for squeaky clean wines. I found the wine very charming and enjoyable, perfect for everyday use. Priced according to its quality at 17€.

Vin de France from Ardèche, made in a very non-interventionist fashion from 100% Syrah using carbonic maceration. Again Lot 2012/25/07/13, which probably translates to vintage 2012.

Rather consistent with my previous tasting notes, although this time the wine comes across as more pure and vibrant and less funky - although no doubt exhibiting some subtle undertones of VA and bretty farmhouse funk. Very natural style, but noticeably less weird and objectionable and more smashable. Pretty great stuff.

Lot 2012/25/07/13, which probably translates to vintage 2012, bottled on 25th of July 2013. Vin de France from Ardèche, made in a very non-interventionist fashion from 100% Syrah using carbonic maceration.

Deep and dark - almost slightly concentrated - black cherry color with a youthful blue hue. Very bright and vibrant nose with aromas of ripe and juicy blackberries and blueberries along with some lifted, sweet volatile character, a hint of sweet strawberries and a hint of raspberry jam. The wine is light-bodied yet muscular, bright and crunchy on the palate with intense flavors of tart lingonberries, crushed peppercorns, earthy spice, some spicy notes reminding me of rye porridge, a little bit of cranberries and a touch of olive. The acidity feels high, almost crisp, and the tannins are medium, yet there is enough concentration and fruit to make the mouthfeel feel even somewhat soft. The finish is somewhat earthy and moderately grippy with flavors of roasted spices, olive tapenade, very ripe dark berries, light crunchy notes of crowberries and chokeberries, some lifted VA tones of nail polish remover and a hint of tannic bitterness.

A super-vibrant and rather weird Syrah with incredibly pure and intense fruit along with some VA and slightly odd naturalist hints. I really love the pure, unadulterated Syrah character here, but at times the funky notes overwhelm the vibrant fruit a bit too much, taking a bit of toll on the drinkability. Overall very nice stuff with enjoyable, crunchy character, but at times it feels a bit too natural for pleasure. Priced according to its quality at 20€.

Vin de France Syrah Blend, Syrah more

A blend of Syrah and Grenache, aged for 8 months in foudres. Made with very hands-off philosophy. A Vin de France, so no vintage disclosed on the front label. The back label has a code 2013/10/04/14, so I'd wager the wine is from the vintage 2013 and bottled either on April or October 2014.

Very dark and fully opaque strawberry juice color. At first the nose is heavily reductive and stuffy with aromas of smoke and some hard-boiled eggs. However, with some air the nose clears up to reveal dark-toned aromas of ripe blackberries, wild strawberries, some savory chokeberries and classic Syrah notes of black pepper. The wine is full-bodied yet also very crisp and almost racy on the palate with intense, dark-toned flavors of crunchy blackberries, tart lingonberries, some savory dark berries, a little bit of nuanced volatile sweetness and a touch of floral violet character. The overall feel is very fresh and structured, not unlike a Crozes-Hermitage, with high acidity and firm, moderately grippy medium tannins. The finish is complex, moderately bitter and rather tannic with intense, savory flavors of tart cranberries, fresh dark berries, some tart dark plums, a little bit of peppery spice and a hint of complex VA character.

A lovely and characterful Vin de France off the beaten path. The wine isn't light and delicate, yet it drinks like one. Even if the wine is a classic Southern Rhône blend, it drinks much more like a Northern Rhône wine, but with its own, unique character. The Grenache shows, but not like it does in Southern Rhône but instead more like how it does in the cooler climates of Catalonia. Wild and crunchy stuff that shows lovely intensity, power and freshness. Recommended.

NV Andrea Calek Blonde

Vin de France White Blend more

A blend of Chardonnay and Viognier made without any added sulfites. Officially an NV as this is a Vin de Table, the back label states this is Lot 2016/04/03/17. 12% alcohol.

Cloudy greenish-white lime color. Wild, aromatic and cidery nose with dry aromas of cider apples, cool herbs, apricots, some sweeter exotic fruits, a little bit of gummy bear candies and something slightly funky, perhaps a touch of brett. The wine is fresh, medium-bodied and lively on the palate with a little bit of CO2 prickle. Flavor-wise the wine feels more ripe and fruit-forward than the nose with flavors of ripe apples, sour peaches, some white fruits and a little bit of stony minerality. Although bone-dry, the ripeness of the fruit suggests enough sweetness to give the wine good balance. The structure is pretty great, thanks to the relatively high acidity. The finish is ripe, wild and a bit green with flavors of sweet white fruits, some grassy green character, a little bit of fresh apple and a hint of bretty funk that seems to develop into a lightest touch of mousiness after awhile.

A fun, really characterful and very unique natural wine with good combination of freshness and ripeness. I can understand why some people think of this wine as cidery, but for me this is much more vinous than cidery - I've had a lot more cider-like wines whereas this feels more like a normal (natural) white wine with a bit of CO2 prickle and hazy appearance. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that dirty hint of mousiness towards the end of the aftertaste, but fortunately it isn't noticeable enough to ruin the wine. An interesting wine by all accounts, but perhaps not the wine you'd actually want to seek out. This is still a wine you'll definitely want to try out if you happen to come across a bottle, though.
